Fundraising for school trips is rite of passage for most students and their families, and finding new ways is challenging.

However, sometimes the tried and true works just fine.

A group of 23 Maniototo Area School students, along with 12 adults, are planning to visit Vietnam in April next year and have been hard at work raising money.

Parent Becky Bruhns said the fundraising committee hoped to cover about half the $250,000 it would cost for the group’s trip and was on target to meet that goal.

She was part of the team organising a fundraising quiz night next Saturday night, Mrs Bruhns said.

Teams of eight would be competing for prizes, as well as glory and could enter for $20.

There would be a special prize for the lowest scoring team, she said.

As well as the quiz there would be raffles, an auction, a cash bar and supper.

Extra games would be run between rounds with prizes for them too.

Items up for grabs in the auction included a bow hunting adventure; a fishing trip out of Moeraki; a catered Vietnamese-themed dinner and cocktails at your home for four people; a Cromwell escape package for two people with accommodation and adventures; and a working bee with 10 people doing your bidding for four hours.

People and businesses had been generous in their donations for raffles and auctions and in contributing to the running costs so the fundraising got the maximum boost.

Quizmaster Matt Chisholm had given a copy of his new book to be raffled, Mrs Bruhns said.

If anyone wanted to join the evening but did not have a team of eight the organisers would help out, she said.

Team registrations can be made at Maniototo Pharmacy or on 027417-3987.
