The removal of the Glenfinnan training works, a flood protection structure in the Matukituki River, is unlikely before March, Wanaka service centre manager Barbara East told Wanaka Community Board members yesterday.
Ms East has been liaising with the Otago Regional Council, which called for tenders to remove the steel structure in November.
Ms East explained that while the ORC had hoped to remove the structure before Christmas, it was not possible in such a short time-frame and work would start after the summer boating season.
The training works were built in the 1970s and consist of about 200 tripods and 800 rails.
They were intended to maintain the alignment of a river channel and reduce land erosion on the north side of the river.
Boating accidents at the training works site have prompted calls to remove the structure.
Some parts of the structure have been vandalised.
Opposers also argued the structure was largely ineffective in protecting against floods.
