Street party marks start of spring

Fairies, giant bubbles, aerial gymnasts and cultural dances entertained the crowd at the annual Cromwell Promotions street party and fireworks event on Sunday.

Crowds gathered in the town’s heritage precinct from late afternoon to enjoy the entertainers, the stalls and dinner from the myriad food trucks that lined the entrance to the area.

Cromwell Promotions Group marketing and communication manager Tanya Dennis said the event had been going for many years and celebrated the filling of the dam.

It also welcomed the beginning of spring while celebrating the charm and beauty of the heritage area.

The event was a great way for the community to connect and this year a cultural corner had been added to represent the growing international community in Cromwell, Mrs Dennis said.

"It’s a recognition of the changing landscape of Cromwell."

The Filipino, Ukrainian and Indian communities were represented.

"Today we are planting the seed for the cultural aspect to grow in the future."

A DJ got the party started and musicians entertained as the evening progressed.

Members of the Filipino community performed a traditional dance and there was Bollywood dancing and performances from Ni-Vanuatu people in the district.

Cromwell College pupils also put on a Jump Jam demonstration, a fusion of dance and fitness.

For the younger crowd and those wanting to get involved, there was a bouncy castle, face painting and a hula-hoop workshop as well as henna hand-painting and sari wrapping demonstrations.

The Cromwell Scouts returned with the haunted hall event in the old Masonic Lodge in the precinct.

It was a popular event and a great fundraiser for the scouts, Mrs Dennis said.

The grand finale was, of course, the fireworks display over the lake.
