It now hosts pedal power, not locomotives. But the restored and repurposed Clyde Railway Station building represented a project of the highest order and one deserving of the national award it had received, those celebrating the project last weekend said.

Clyde Railway Station working group convener Clair Higginson recently received a Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand award on behalf of the groups behind the project, and a plaque recognising the honour was unveiled at a ceremony at the railway station on Saturday.

The award was for the railway station working group, Promote Dunstan and Central Otago District Council and was ``awesome recognition'' of the restoration project, Ms Higginson said.

Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand Otago representative Bruce Shalders said at the ceremony the groups had ensured the Clyde Railway Station building had a ``meaningful future''.

Promote Dunstan president Rory Butler said Promote Dunstan had mooted the idea of restoring the building in 2007. At the time it housed a steam engine museum but had fallen into disrepair.

A conservation report was done in 2010 and a ``Save Our Station'' committee subsequently formed.

It raised $10,000, Promote Dunstan donated $20,000 and grants funded the remainder of the $90,000 restoration.

It reopened in 2015 housing a commercial tenant, Shebikeshebikes, and a museum room, which featured a replica of the original railway station made by Clyde man Bob Allen.

Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan said the station - opened in 1907 - was one of the most important buildings in Clyde and it was with ``great pride'' he noted the work of the ``hands-on, hardworking'' railway station working group.
