The night was a celebration of Kiwiana but it is highly likely Elvis bumped into Doris Day backstage.
Elvis was definitely in the house; the judging panel included Billy T James, Lynn of Tawa and Fred Dagg; and Central Otago residents were almost unrecognisable as they transformed into international stars and a few homegrown ones.
The occasion was the sixth Omakau Stars in Your Eyes show on Saturday night and 14 acts took part in the event, run as a fundraiser for the Omakau School and community pool.
''There's always a sell-out crowd, so we don't really need to advertise it,'' one of the organisers, Bec Calder, of St Bathans, said. The Home and School committee organises the two-yearly show and always enters into the spirit of the evening.
This year, members played Topp Twins characters, including Ken, the Gingham twins, Camp Mother and Camp Leader, and Prue and Dilly.
Their rendition of Poi-e gained the group the third-highest number of votes for the evening, behind winner Heidi Gillespie, of Oturehua, as Pat Benatar, and Adam Rubie, of Omakau, as Andrew Fagan.
Mrs Calder said the final proceeds from the show would not be known until later this week. As always, sponsors had been generous and the event was well supported by the wider district, she said.
