Sorting through masses of books for ideal reading material is usually a fairly serious business but a flood of giggles broke out yesterday when step-siblings Joshua Parker, Bryleigh and Tyla Low and Ashton Taylor discovered The Ultimate Book of Farting.
The book's sound effects took them by surprise, and provided entertainment for them and other holidaymakers browsing through the remaining stock at the sale.
The children quickly added the book to their holiday reading stockpile. Book sale convener Ken Cook, of Alexandra, said the takings on the first day of the five-day sale - $13,000 - were a record.
''That's our best ever and we've raised $23,000 so far and hope we hit the $26,000 mark on the last day, especially if the weather lives up to the forecast and we get a wet day,'' Mr Cook said.
Today is the sale's final day and all books are half-price.
This is the 26th year of the event and holidaymakers often buy a stack of books, read them and return them to be ''recycled''.
Nic Cross, her sister Leeanne Turnbull and her nephew Ben Reid (14), all of Gore, were among those at the sale yesterday and Ms Cross was delighted to find a book from one of her favourite authors, Kitty Neale.
''They're really hard to find and this was one I hadn't read before.
''That's the most exciting thing that's happened to me so far these holidays,'' she said.
