Sixteen teams from eight Central Otago schools put their curling skills to the test and battled it out on the ice at the annual Central Otago Primary Schools Interschool Curling Competition in Alexandra yesterday.
In its 13th year, the competition is held on the final day of second term and has become a highlight in the calendar for year 7 and 8 pupils.
Clyde School principal Steph Kitto said the event was something the pupils looked forward to each year.
"They’re trying something new — for a lot of the kids they’ve only had a couple of goes [at curling]."
Experienced curlers were on hand to share their skills and teach proper curling etiquette to the pupils, as well as help oversee the matches.
Organiser Nick Loughnan has overseen the competition since it began in 2008 and said it was an opportunity for the pupils to try something new and give curling a go.
"I’ve always thought kids should be introduced to different codes of sport as much as possible — it’s the future of any sport," Mr Loughnan said.
Roxburgh Area School took home the top honour of first place followed by Poolburn School and St Gerard’s Primary School.
