Competition was tightly matched at the Otago Daily Times Extra! Central Otago current events quizzes held in Cromwell last night, with only a few points separating the top three placegetters in both sections of the competition.

The Terrace 2 team won the year 5 and 6 section with a score of 96 points out of a possible 100.

Hard on its heels were Goldfields 2 with 94 points, followed two points behind by Alexandra 2 on 92 points.

Cromwell College 4 won the year 7 and 8 section, with 91 points.

Clyde 1 and The Terrace 1 were second-equal, with 87 points each.

The event, which is run by the Otago Daily Times through its Newspapers in Education publication Extra!, attracted teams from throughout Central Otago, along with teams from both Queenstown and Wanaka.

Competition in the year 5 and 6 event, which had 42 entries, was outstanding, quiz co-ordinator and Extra! editor Ivan Behrnes said last night.

"It was right up there, really close and an excellent standard."

The winning team from The Terrace was James Sawers, Milly van Dam and Sam O'Brien.

James and Sam had competed before but it was Milly's first time at the competition.

Two of the winning team in the year 7 and 8 quiz, in which 47 teams were entered, won last year's year 5 and 6 event, although that evening they represented Goldfields School.

This year Cromwell College pupils Hannah Elliott and Delah Clark were joined by Georgina Jackson.

It was much harder competing in the older children's quiz, Hannah said, so she was very pleased to win.

The Central Otago event is the first of four Extra! current events quizzes, with contests in Timaru, Christchurch and Dunedin over the next month.

The first was due to be held in Christchurch last week, but was postponed due to the earthquake.
