They celebrated the anniversary in Alexandra on Monday with about 30 members of their family.
The couple were married on January 25, 1964 at St Patrick’s Church, Invercargill.
Mr Fahey is a retired farmer, while Mrs Fahey is a former nurse.
Both have a keen interest in sport and met at a local sport celebration — though whether it was a rugby or hockey occasion is still up for debate between the pair.
This shared interest in sport, and a strong sense of faith, are what Mr and Mrs Fahey credit for a long and happy marriage.
