A police spokeswoman said they were alerted to the incident on Kawerau Gorge Rd, near the Cardrona Roaring Meg Track, at 5.40pm.
Police, fire and ambulance were in attendance.
"Medical attention was administered to the driver but he died at the scene," police said.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said two appliances from Cromwell as well as a support vehicle were at the scene.
The serious crash unit and work safe have been advised.
