Series of 'nuisance' offences

Police are wondering if some ''nuisance offending'' in Alexandra this week is the work of teenagers getting into trouble during the school holidays.

Acting Senior Sergeant Simon Paget, of Cromwell, said the series of eight wilful damage and disorderly behaviour incidents between Sunday and Tuesday were probably ''indicative of the school holidays starting''.

He described the activities in Ventry, Clutha and Matau Sts as all ''nuisance'' types of offending.

One vehicle was flour-bombed on the corner of Matau and Bringans Sts, another in Ventry St was spray-painted and in another incident, a parked truck in Clutha St was tied with rope to another vehicle.

When the owner of the truck, who was unaware of the rope, started to drive it, there was a collision between the truck and the vehicle it was tied to, causing damage to both vehicles, Acting Snr Sgt Paget said.

A birdbath was pulled over a fence, the power at a house was turned off and someone poured beer over the rink at the IceInline complex.

''This could be the work of adults, but it's more likely to be young people on school holidays, '' he said.

''We'd remind parents to make sure they know where their kids are in the holidays and what they're up to. It's not our job to babysit your kids.''

Anyone aware of any suspicious behaviour should phone 111 immediately, he said.

Police would also like to hear from anyone with information about the incidents or who wanted to report other wilful damage matters from the same evening.

Acting Sergeant Toni Velenski said vehicles were damaged and residents frightened by the incidents but she was confident that with help from the public, police would identify the person or people responsible.
