The completion of a keenly sought pedestrian crossing on Alexandra's main street should vastly improve safety for pedestrians and mobility scooter drivers, says road safety adviser Jo Robinson.

The crossing, on Centennial Ave, between Postie Plus and Southern Wide Real Estate, met a need identified about three years ago, she said.

Mrs Robinson, who is the Central Otago District Council community road safety adviser, welcomed the new crossing and new cycle lanes, done as part of a $1.4 million safety upgrade and resurfacing of the state highway in the centre of the town.

"We've had lots of community groups seeking a pedestrian crossing in that area, near the [New World] supermarket and people who use mobility scooters have also been asking for it."

The cycle lanes meant cyclists could proceed through town and out to the Otago Central Rail Trail Rail at Clyde, on dedicated cycle lanes.

The upgrade included angle parks in the Golden Block shopping area being changed to parallel parks and the construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 8 and Clutha St, due for completion by the end of the month.
