Two Dunedin men are facing drug charges after their car was pulled over by police in Roxburgh because the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
When police stopped the pair about 4pm yesterday in Scotland St, Roxburgh, cannabis was detected in the vehicle and the passenger produced a small bag of the drug.
Search and surveillance powers were invoked and, as a result, a "significant" amount of cannabis and what police believe to be LSD and ecstasy were also found in the car, along with a "substantial" amount of cash.
The driver attempted to flee with a bag containing cannabis and what is believed to be ecstasy but failed to make his escape.
Otago Rural CIB staff are now leading the inquiry and investigating the men's activities further.
The two Dunedin men, both aged 23, will face possession for supply charges and more charges are being considered.
Relieving Otago Rural Area Commander Inspector Andrew Burns said the routine stop represented 'a very good catch' by the rural drink drive staff with great support from the local Roxburgh constable.
"It clearly demonstrates that road stops which might appear routine can sometimes bring to light more than simply traffic offending," he said.
