Roundabout seen as the safe option

There are plans for a roundabout in Alexandra at a three-way intersection on SH8 which often confuses motorists.

Transit New Zealand sought public input on two computer-modelled options to improve the Dunorling St-Tarbert St-Centennial Ave intersection last month.

Transit area engineer John Jarvis said a roundabout was preferred over the option of traffic lights.

"It was never going to be a straight vote but it did give us good feedback on what people wanted."

Mr Jarvis said the evidence was fairly conclusive that a roundabout would be the safest option and would be more efficient than the alternative.

Transit had received considerable public comment on the safety issues for cyclists and pedestrians and the roundabout would provide a much safer option for them, he said.

Pedestrians would be catered for with a splitter island with an improved centre refuge for a crossing point on Dunorling St, and the existing pedestrian crossing near Alexandra Primary School would move closer to the main intersection.

The cost of the project would be about $480,000.

The next step would be to take the designs to Transit's national office and then seek funding for the proposal.

Mr Jarvis will present the report to the Vincent Community Board on Monday.
