Ten signs along a stretch of State Highway 85 between Omakau and Wedderburn were either snapped or damaged by the wind and two or three would need replacing, while the rest were able to be repaired with new posts, New Zealand Transport Agency Central Otago manager John Jarvis said.
The cost was expected to be between $3000 and $5000.
The Central Otago District Council received one callout on Sunday to remove tree debris from Racecourse Rd, near Omakau, roading manager Julie Muir said yesterday.
Some debris was also being removed from St Bathans roads but that was the total extent of the damage, she said.
"It was all just branches blown down; nothing major like big trees across roads."
Wind-speed details recorded by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) Lauder research station on Sunday showed the strongest wind gust recorded at any weather station was 115kmh at Lauder at 6pm.
The maximum gust at Ranfurly was 99kmh, compared with 69kmh at Cromwell and 45kmh at Alexandra the same day.
Wind is measured at the top of a 10m mast but it can still vary considerably within short distances.
