The section, between Holloway and Naylor Sts, was previously unused railway land but subdivision and construction in recent years has resulted in businesses with no postal address.
The rest of Fache St is numbered in the opposite direction and so, in September, the Central Otago District Council resolved to change the name of the affected section, as renumbering would be too hard.
Following public consultation on the proposal, 23 submissions were received with ''widespread support'', council roading manager Julie Muir said.
Most of the submissions said it was logical or easy to change the name of the section. Only two submissions did not support the change - one, from Pamela Brown of Dunedin, said she was not sure and questioned the choice of Holloway. The other, Wilma Paulin, suggested it should be named Stevens St as ''Mr and Mrs Stevens were the first teachers at the Clyde School and they still have many descendants living in the area''.
Ms Muir said there was some urgency in renaming the street because postal addresses needed to be issued to the new properties and if the council was to go with the Stevens St option, another round of public consultation would be needed.
Numbering is to continue from the existing number one on Holloway street increasing towards Naylor St.
She said Land Information New Zealand would be informed of the decision and road signs would be changed accordingly.
The council resolved to consider the name Stevens St for any streets created in Clyde by future subdivision.
