The Alexandra ice rink could be on the move, with plans for the facility to cosy up to the Molyneux Aquatic Centre to share heat.
The Vincent Community Board yesterday considered a report exploring IceInline relocating from its site bordering the highway on the outskirts of town, to beside the pool complex, in Molyneux Park. Central Otago District Council infrastructure manager Jon Kingsford said sharing a single electricity connection would save both facilities money, plus the relocation would allow waste heat from ice-making to be used to help heat the pool.
The board approved the proposal in principle and suggested a due diligence review be carried out, to take a closer look at the plan's risks and benefits.
Mr Kingsford said the aquatic centre was responsible for 43% of the $479,000 the board spent on electricity this financial year. The IceInline season was limited to 90 days because the rink was uncovered. An upgraded, covered facility able to be used year-round would cost about $2.6 million. The Central Lakes Trust had been involved in the discussions, as a potential funder, board members were told.
IceInline chairman Graham McNabb said the organisation was happy with progress. Mr Kingsford said savings from using less power, reduced line charges and peak demand factors would be enough to service a loan of up to $1.5 million to relocate the ice rink. Board member Graeme Bell said a combined ice rink and swimming pool complex operated well in Gore.
