Showing her skills in a dressage display before her "home crowd" on Saturday was more nerve-racking than competing in the South Island Dressage Championships the weekend before, says Kate Maclean.

The Omakau teenager, who turns 15 tomorrow , and her pony, Pepee, won two South Island titles at the Christchurch event - the South Island Pony Champion and Level Three (elementary grade) Champion Pony.

Back home and competing in the Central Otago A and P Show in Omakau on Saturday, Kate admitted giving a dressage demonstration on her home turf made her more nervous than competing at the South Island championships.

"Here, everybody knows me, so that makes me more aware of the crowd and who is watching you. I don't really think about that at the other competitions."

Kate teamed up with her new horse, Oscar De La Hoya, for the display, performing an advanced level routine.

The Maclean family farm is next to the showgrounds and the family had a good day at the Omakau show.

Kate and Pepee won the supreme champion pony title and Kate's grandfather, Don Maclean, collected the supreme champion sheep ribbon for one of his entries.

The talented young dressage rider has had a busy start to the year, with most weekends devoted to competition or training.

This is her third year of dressage competition and she has been riding for almost eight years.

A good crowd attended the show despite the overcast weather and strong winds, association president Pauline Huddleston said.

"Our gate entry's well up on last year and it's all gone really well, apart from the wind, so we're rapt."
