A major redevelopment of the Wisharts Smithy building within the Old Cromwell Town historic precinct is nearing completion.

Breen Construction Ltd workers are completing the two-storey building's interior and Old Cromwell manager Elisabeth Williamson is planning a grand opening of the facility in late February or early March.

Wisharts is the last remaining commercial building of Cromwell's original main street, and its redevelopment was organised as part of a $1 million restoration of the historic precinct area.

The building is classified as a category 2 property by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

Mrs Williamson said the trust had been involved in assuring its redevelopment was appropriate.

Interpretive displays and information panels will be placed inside the building once it is completed.

The restored Wisharts will be complemented by a rebuilt Globe Hotel and old post office building.

Together, they formed the bulk of development at the precinct.

Mrs Williamson said all three projects should be finished by mid-2010.
