Removal of sand allowed

A land-use application by Beau Trevathan to extract up to 10,000cu m of sand a year for 15 years from his property at Lindis Crossing has been approved by the Central Otago District Council hearings panel.

The rural 1 zone provides for quarrying, taking and processing of material occurring naturally in the vicinity. Sand had been removed under a mining licence for the past 50 years until the expiry in 1988.

An agreement with Transit New Zealand will see a new access point on to State Highway 8. The entrance will be moved further north to the one-way Lindis bridge.

The sand will be used predominantly for supplying golf courses. No sand will be removed from a certain area proposed by Mr Trevathan as a Queen Elizabeth II National Trust covenant to protect the botanical and entomological features of the area.

A list of 20 conditions includes progressive restoration of the area as the sand is extracted, the application of dust suppressants to the carriageway near SH8 and payment of $7039 for roading.
