One Cromwell College team attributed their win to a star player as they grabbed trivia victory against rival schools last night.
At the Otago Daily Times Extra! current events quiz at Cromwell College, teams of three from the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes regions had their general knowledge tested in categories such as world flags, photo recognition, current events and newspaper research.
The team of Charlotte Fluksa, Flynn Wilson and Simone Wilson scored 95 out of 100 to win the years 7 and 8 section. They bested 45 other teams from 12 schools.
Simone said Flynn did ‘‘pretty much everything’’.
‘‘He’s really smart.’’
Flynn was in a team that won the years 5 and 6 section last year while at Cromwell’s Goldfields Primary.
Simone said they were glad to beat a certain team from St Gerard’s School in Alexandra.
‘‘They were asking for it. They kept talking to us and asking what answers we put.’’
The years 5 and 6 section was won by Ella Gibson, Freddie Hore and Paxton Francis, of St John’s School in Ranfurly, with 95 points out of 100.
It was the first win for the school in the competition’s 15-year history. They beat 39 teams from 13 schools.
Paxton credited the win to the group’s superior teamwork.
‘‘It’s not like we really prepared. I’ll try to get it back for my school next year too.’’
Freddie attributed his trivia knowledge to watching the news every night.
Quiz co-ordinator and Extra! editor Ivan Behrnes said there were some knowledgeable pupils in the regions who equalled the scores of children at the recent Christchurch quiz.
Years 9 and 10 pupils will battle it out tonight.
