Warm weather meant punters were out in force at the Wyndham Harness Racing Club meeting at Cromwell racecourse yesterday.

Despite being from Southland, the club has hosted a race day at Cromwell every January 6 for 16 years, club president Brendan Duffy said.

Part of the rationale behind racing in Cromwell was that plenty of people were on holiday at this time of year, meaning more people were likely turn out to the races.

"It’s a good day out," he said.

As well as the racing, there was also entertainment for the children, including bouncy castles and mini jeeps.

The day also boasted the usual fashion in the field events, featuring categories for men, women and children.

Johny Hercik, of Kaiapoi, was one of the entrants in the children’s category.

The 12-year-old said he wanted to win the event with the "goofiest outfit possible".

With the help of his designer — cousin Harry McCrae — he went to the Salvation Army Family Store to find a cheap outfit.

Johny took to the catwalk with a pink dressing gown, slippers and a hat with a wig.

He did not make it to the finals.
