Alexandra's promotion group has survived - just - and will operate with a skeleton crew of four committee members.

Promote Alexandra Inc held a special general meeting in the town last night after six of the former committee's eight members resigned in August.

Apart from five past and present committee members, only eight people attended last night's meeting.

It was suggested more people would have attended had there not been a large funeral in the town before the 5.30pm meeting.

Former secretary Alice Stewart said the group required at least four committee members to form a quorum, and called for people to volunteer.

"It's open season at this stage for Promote Alexandra, and for people to either stand up or shut up. Anyone coming on board is in a position to write a strategic plan, and move forward," Mrs Stewart said.

Dunstan High School international director Jo Kys, of Alexandra, said she was willing to be a member, bringing experience gained when she sat on similar groups in Auckland.

Alexandra businessman Paul Rillstone also committed himself, joining existing members Mark Tait (treasurer), and Cam Withington (Vincent Community Board representative).

Mr Rillstone, managing director of Flooring Xtra in Alexandra, said more of the town's business owners should be involved in the promotions group.

He said meetings between Promote Alexandra, the Alexandra Lions, Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Central Otago could help determine what was needed from a promotions group, and how it could interact with other organisations in the area.

Former Promote Alexandra committee member Denis Claridge said Alexandra residents lacked passion about their town and Cromwell was "eclipsing" it when it came to promotions and economic development.

Vincent Community Board chairwoman Clair Higginson said she was happy to help the group establish a strategic plan, as she had done with Clyde's promotion group, Promote Dunstan.

Newly elected Promote Dunstan president Rory Butler also offered assistance, saying the Clyde group could work with Promote Alexandra if required.

A date for the new Promote Alexandra committee's first meeting has yet to be set.
