A "disappointed" Meridian Energy is considering its response after the Environment Court declined consent for the 176-turbine Project Hayes wind farm in Central Otago's Lammermoor Range.

The court has upheld an appeal against the $2 billion project, which was granted resource consent by the Central Otago District Council (CODC) and Otago Regional Council (ORC).

Spokesman Alan Seay said in a statement Meridian would assess the decision in detail and "consider the company's potential responses, and implications for Project Hayes".

Project Hayes was to be the largest wind farm development in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing 92 sq km of land on the Lammermoor Range.

Meridian's plans stirred outrage among environmentalists who said the untouched landscape should be preserved.

The Environment Court hearing started in May 2008 and after three adjournments was completed in February this year.
