Central Otago District Council revenue and financing manager Jamie Cunningham stands beside an electric car charger in Alexandra which was activated this week.

He said the council allowed ChargeNet to install the "rapid charger" next to Centennial Park, and also offered a site in Ranfurly, to encourage use of electric cars in the district.

The company also had its eye on locations in Cromwell and Roxburgh and was talking to the New Zealand Transport Agency about a site in Tarras.
