Electricity was cut to about 100 customers in Cromwell yesterday after an Aurora Energy contractor damaged a low-voltage underground cable while working on the network.

The damaged cable was in Molyneux Ave and a member of the public said it caused a power surge in nearby Ray St.

An Aurora spokesman said no-one was hurt in the incident, but ''the fault current did cause the protective coating on the overhead lines to melt''.

Protective coating could be seen pulling away from power lines, and fallen on the ground.

The Aurora spokesman said power was cut to about 100 customers in the immediate area about 9.30am, when protection devices were operated and isolated the fault.

Repairs were made to the underground cable and overhead lines and power was restored to all affected customers by 1.30pm.
