Pool replacement another year away

A new Roxburgh swimming complex is unlikely to be completed by next summer, so the existing swimming pool may be used for one more season.

The Roxburgh Community Board has been considering alternative pool replacements, after it decided the facility would cost too much to upgrade.

Originally, it considered a two-pool complex on the existing site, but scaled back plans after being told such a complex would cost more than $1 million.

Board chairman Stephen Jeffery told the board's estimates meeting this week he was meeting the Roxburgh Area School board of trustees soon to discuss a joint venture between the school and the community to develop a new pool.

The existing pool is partly on Central Otago District Council land and partly on school ground.

"The meeting will be the start of the process and to think we can have something ready before next summer is dream land," Mr Jeffery said.

"It may get to the point where we have no swimming pool for one year, because we're looking at using the existing site and it may not be possible to finish the pool in one year."

Board member Helen Pinder said board of trustees and pool committee member Rick Kristel had indicated he was prepared to volunteer his services to keep the old pool open for another season if that was required.

"The pool has held up well this year, but we need to get off our bottoms and get the new one sorted," she said.

It was highly unlikely that building would begin by winter.
