Plans for New Zealand's first tertiary boutique brewing classes are bubbling away in Cromwell.

Otago Polytechnic chief executive Phil Ker said a craft brewing course for its Central campus was "high on the priority list''.

"If it goes ahead, it would be unique in New Zealand.''

The tertiary institution was assembling an advisory group, which was part of the process for getting permission for the qualification, he said.

It had consulted widely with the industry, he said.

He did not want to comment further, as the polytechnic was still in talks with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

"We're in a process. We haven't yet got approval to develop the qualifications. When we've got that approval we've got something to celebrate.''

The polytechnic is exploring new course ideas for its Central Campus as part of an expansion. It has plans to amalgamate its three Cromwell sites on its Bannockburn Rd site.
