Police give warning to young, unlicensed drivers

Police concerns about unlicensed drivers were highlighted this week after two teenagers were caught driving in separate incidents within 16 hours.

Central Otago sub-area police commander Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said both had earlier been forbidden to drive as they were unlicensed.

A 15-year-old Cromwell youth, riding a motorcycle on a Cromwell greenway on Monday afternoon, and a 16-year-old Alexandra youth, driving a vehicle on Chicago St yesterday morning, had both been referred to police youth aid.

The motorcycle and vehicle had been impounded for 28 days and it was ''timely to remind the owners of vehicles to make sure they check whether anyone using their vehicle has the appropriate licence or you could lose that vehicle for 28 days'', Snr Sgt Kerrisk said. There had been ongoing concern about people riding motorcycles on the Cromwell greenways and those routes were deemed to be roads.

''Neither youth has ever held a licence and have been stopped before ...

"It's a case of: if you don't have a licence, don't drive. If you're of legal age, go and start the process to obtain a driver's licence,'' he said.
