Shannon McKelvey channelled the 1960s in her third-time-lucky win of the Miss Alexandra Swimsuit title yesterday.

It was the third year the contest has been staged and the 21-year-old Alexandra waitress has entered every year, finishing second last year and in top place yesterday.

Nine young women vied for the title and Miss McKelvey chose to wear a two-piece 1960s-style high-waisted bikini.

''I thought it was a different style from what everyone else would be wearing.''

In its first two years, the contest, run by Promote Alexandra, has been staged at the Molyneux Aquatic Centre but this time the venue was Molyneux Park and the event was held before the Otago Volts twenty20 game against the Auckland Aces.

''That was so much fun. It's a real adrenaline rush going out in front of a crowd like that,'' Miss McKelvey said.

''But it takes a lot of nerve to go out in front of this many people in a bikini and strut your stuff.''

As she headed out to the makeshift catwalk and her yellow stiletto shoes dug into the turf, she was focusing on one thing: ''I was thinking: just don't fall over''.

''I probably seemed quite calm this year, because I knew what to expect and anyway, I didn't enter to win, just to have a good time.''

Miss McKelvey recommended the contest to other young women and said it was a great confidence-booster.

She was unsure about the venue but said ''a change is as good as a holiday''.

''But it doesn't really matter, so long as the sun is shining.''

The first runner-up in the contest was Emma Brenssell (18), of Alexandra, who also won Miss Photogenic. The second runner-up was Leitesha Pentelow (16), of Cromwell.

Promote Alexandra secretary-manager Martin McPherson said he believed the event had ''added something to the cricket''.

''I don't think it's boosted the number of people here at the cricket, but I do think it added something, as far as the entertainment went.''
