Traffic lights or a roundabout? Those are the two options to improve the SH8-SH85 intersection in Alexandra that will be presented to the public next week.

Transit New Zealand will be in town on Monday to outline the alternatives a single-lane roundabout at a cost of $480,000 or two-phase traffic signals at $400,000.

Transit's regional network manager, Murray Clark, said the traffic lights would be set with one phase for the Centennial Ave-Dunorling St traffic and the other for the Tarbert St-Centennial Ave traffic.

There would be a setting for pedestrians as well, as it was often difficult for pedestrian and cyclists to negotiate the busy intersection.

Right and left-turning arrows would probably be incorporated into the traffic light design as well, if that was what the community preferred.

Transit's area engineer, John Jarvis, said traffic engineers would be on hand to explain the benefits of each option, including a computerised simulation and preliminary plans.

Public input was an important part of the project.

"This project will not only affect motorists but also pedestrians and cyclists at these busy down-town intersections,'' Mr Jarvis said.

Feedback forms will be provided, and once that feedback is collated, a final report will be prepared for design work to start.

Construction is planned for 2009-10 subject to funding approval.

The options will be presented on Monday, at the offices of Opus International Consultants on the ground floor of the Tarbert St buildings, 69 Tarbert St, from 11am until 6pm.
