Old-fashioned fun and games celebrate museum milestone

Alexandra's museum celebrated a historical milestone of its own at the weekend.

The 50th anniversary celebrations of the museum spanned three days and involved three separate events - a book launch, a social evening, and a family picnic in Pioneer Park to round off the celebrations.

Museum association president Gill Grant said it was a great occasion.

"We had a full house for the book launch and about 120 people came to the social evening, and six schools from all over the district took part in the family sports day," she said.

The museum is now incorporated within Central Stories museum and art gallery in Alexandra and that complex was the focal point for the celebrations at the weekend.

The association had recently published two books - The Gold Baron, by John McCraw, and the history of the museum - Alexandra - Exploring the Town's Heritage, by former staff member Jamie Bell.

Both books were printed by Otago Daily Times Print and it was thrilling for the museum group to be associated with publishing such high-quality historical books, Mrs Grant said.

The picnic in the park was a fun day out for families, and children took part in egg and spoon races, as well as wheelbarrow and three-legged races, and also used hoops and skipping ropes.

The day was rounded off with a barbecue lunch and a helicopter display.

"It's been a great way to celebrate the anniversary - a full house for both the book launch and then the social evening, followed by the family day which gave the children a taste of some old-fashioned games, which they've thoroughly enjoyed," Mrs Grant said.
