'Obnoxious' drunks keep police busy at weekend

Alexandra police spent most of the weekend dealing with drunk and disorderly people, many of whom were visiting the town from Dunedin.

Constable Mike Colligan, of Alexandra, said officers had to deal with a large number of people who seemed "hell-bent" on being obnoxious.

One incident involving four highly intoxicated middle-aged men from Dunedin was typical of those encountered.

"They went to the Alexandra pie-cart on Centennial Ave to get a meal. One of the men decided he didn't like the food very much so he threw it straight back into the pie-cart."

The men paid reparation and no charges were laid.

"For middle-aged men, their actions were appalling and obnoxious. We spent all Saturday night dealing with things like that," Const Colligan said.

Street signs were broken and marker pegs were pulled out around town.

Const Colligan said most people in breach of the town's recently instated liquor ban did not realise they were breaking the law and were happy to comply when told to dispose of their alcohol.

Just two people were arrested during the weekend, including an 18-year-old Alexandra youth.

Const Colligan said the youth smashed five large shop-front double-glazed windows in the soon-to-be Dick Smith Electronic store opposite Alexandra New World on Centennial Ave, and when being arrested, he resisted police and kicked a window of the police vehicle, which also smashed.

The youth is to appear before a registrar in the Alexandra District Court tomorrow.
