New ice rink supported

The Central Otago public has given a unanimous answer to proposals to build a $1.5 million covered ice rink in Alexandra next to the swimming pool - yes, go for it.

The Vincent Community Board had sought views on whether the board should contribute up to that amount to relocate the ice rink next to the Molyneux Aquatic Centre to use the waste heat from the rink to heat the pool.

Eighty-five submissions were received, all in favour of the proposal.

Energy cost savings would be used to ''fund'' repayments of a loan for the project, so no rates increase was needed.

IceInline had planned to cover its existing facility, sited in Molyneux Park, to extend its season.

The board will meet on Friday to consider the matter. Submitters included the Southern Ice Hockey league, school principals in the wider district, the Alexandra Ice Skating Club and the New Zealand Curling Association, as well as district residents.

Central Otago District Council property and facilities manager Mike Kerr has recommended the board confirm its earlier support for the proposal.

Submitters were also asked to indicate interest in the vacant ice rink site, if the facility was rebuilt beside the pool.

Ideas for the site included roller blading, roller hockey, a base for the Central Otago Model Train Club, using it as the site for hockey turf or retaining it for outdoor skating.

As well, the Central Rock Climbing Club wanted to explore building a climbing wall on the outside of the rink.
