Work to "retrain" the Kyeburn River at the Kyeburn Bridge to spread across the riverbed instead of scouring a channel to one side, threatening the bridge supports, has been completed.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi last month contracted earthworks to spread the pressure of the river’s flows more evenly across the span of the riverbed, reducing the river’s speed and the subsequent scouring of the true left river bank.

NZTA Central Otago maintenance contract manager Peter Standring said the $150,000 work was to protect the bridge’s abutments and was a long-term solution.

The area where moa footprints were found in the riverbed in 2019 is to the right in this image.
