he necessity for an archaeological survey, which has added at least $10,000 to the cost of a new community facility, was questioned by several Vincent Community Board members this week.
It was hoped work on the proposed new $3 million Alexandra Community House would begin this month, but a request by the Central Otago Heritage Trust for an archaeological assessment of the site and buildings has delayed proceedings and added to the cost.
House trust chairwoman Bernie Lepper asked the board for up to $10,000 for the assessment.
The board approved the grant on Monday.
Board member Martin McPherson queried the historical significance of the building.
"My understanding is it's been moved and altered substantially and there's likely to be the odd bit of china on the site but not much else, so I doubt there's much value in the building or the site."
Barrie Wills also questioned the "community value" of an archaeological assessment.
