National caravan rally brings $1.25m

The national motor caravan rally held at Cromwell over Easter Weekend was worth more than $1 million to Central Otago's economy, according to the results of an economic impact survey just released.

Organised by the Central Otago District Council (CODC) in association with the rally organising committee, the survey showed 950 motor caravans came to the rally with more than 400 participants responding to the questionnaire, council Business Development Manager Jonathan Gadd said.

More than 63% had come from the North Island and the largest number of those from north of Taupo.

The average daily spend while in Central Otago was $39 per person and reflected the self-contained nature of the motor home owners.

That was balanced by the long stay of most of the participants which amounted to an average spend of $568 per person.

The total financial impact was $1.25 million, which included direct spending as well as flow on into the community, Mr Gadd said.

Old Cromwell Town, Central Otago historic reserves, and Warbirds Over Wanaka were the most popular attractions, followed by wine tasting, water sports and walking or riding the Otago Central Rail Trail.

Suggestions for future rallies included entertainment and sound systems, waste management and toilet facility improvements, and Mr Gadd said those suggestions would be taken on board.
