Generations of music-lovers are being encouraged to come together for an upcoming celebration of six decades of musicals in the Alexandra district.

The Alexandra Musical Society’s 60th jubilee would celebrate the many productions that had been staged by the society and people were being encouraged to register early for the event, organising committee spokeswoman Ann Jones said.

The September 22-24 celebrations would coincide with Alexandra Blossom Festival weekend and the opening of a special "extravaganza" show by the society, Mrs Jones said.

The compilation show would feature a selection of songs from shows done by the society over the past 60 years, and long-time Clyde musician Billie Tohill had been consulted to help choose which songs would be performed, Matt van den Yssel, who will direct the September production, said.

Mrs Tohill, whose involvement with the society began as musical director for its Ali Baba production in 1979, said every decade had its "great shows", and she was looking forward to reuniting with some of those who had been involved with the society over the years.

Bruce Potter, who will be the musical director for the September show, said there were many "outstanding performers" still in the Alexandra district and the compilation show would feature "some of the old and some of the new".

Mrs Jones said it was hoped a good number would attend the jubilee, and the blossom festival and jubilee show would be additional drawcards. The celebrations will also include a jubilee dinner and barbecue brunch.
