More water meters to be installed

A further 80 properties at Cromwell and Bannockburn will be subject to water metering from July 1, in accordance with the Central Otago District Council's water supply bylaw.

The Cromwell Community Board received a report detailing the planned installation of the extra water meters, at a meeting on Monday.

In his written report to the board, council utility services officer Tony Stiles said 80 properties had been identified as being within the classifications for water meters but were not monitored for water use.

All Bannockburn properties, as well as those in Cromwell deemed commercial or of more than 1100sq m, were metered and owners charged for water use, he said.

Mr Stiles said 419 Cromwell properties and 270 in Bannockburn were already metered.

The board budgeted $130,000 to install water meters in 2008 and 2009, based on a cost estimate for 235 properties.

Of the 80 now needing to be metered, 74 were commercial properties and the rest exceeded 1100sq m.

About $40,000 would be spent installing the meters, after which charging would start immediately.

The board resolved to make a submission to the council's long term council community plan (LTCCP), requesting the unspent $90,000 budgeted for installing water meters this year be deducted from next year's water meter budget.

The board also resolved to name a private right-of-way off McNulty Rd Traders Lane, as requested by Traders Lane Ltd.

The council requests all access roads within subdivisions be named for address purposes, and Traders Lane was the only suggested name for the private road in question.
