Molyneux Stadium repairs funding cut 70%

The budget for repairs and maintenance to Molyneux Stadium in Alexandra has been cut by about 70% as a cloud hangs over the future of the building.

The Vincent Community Board decided at its estimates meeting yesterday to prune the $20,406 allowed for planned repairs and maintenance on the stadium to about $6000.

"What is the future of the facility? Am I right in thinking it still has a cloud hanging over it?" board member Tim Cadogan said.

No decision had been made yet on the building's future and it depended on the demand for Dunstan High School's new gymnasium, board member Mary Flannery said.

The stadium is used for indoor sports and functions and, until this year, had also been used by the high school as a gymnasium during school hours.

However, the school has just built its own $2.3 million gymnasium.

Board chairwoman Clair Higginson said the hire of the stadium had been advertised to gauge future demand for the building.

The board agreed to spend $1478 on the building downpipes, $3696 on the stadium toilet floors and $660 on the scoreboard.

A working party formed about two years ago initially considered upgrading the stadium but it decided the facility no longer met users' needs and would cost too much to refurbish.

That was the catalyst for a study into the redevelopment of Molyneux Park.

A series of designs for redeveloping the 28ha park were unveiled a year ago with options costing from $4.2 million to more than $14 million.
