A Roxburgh woman was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital yesterday morning after her motorcycle crashed into a road barrier near Butchers Dam.

The 54-year-old woman received serious but not life-threatening injuries, Sergeant Matt Alley, of Alexandra, said.

She was still in the hospital's emergency department last night and no further details were available about her condition.

Sgt Alley said the woman was travelling north towards Alexandra on State Highway 8 and the crash happened near Alexandra, on a bend in the road, just north of the Conroys Rd intersection.

The Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter landed in the nearby Flat Top Hill conservation area and the woman was transported by ambulance to the helicopter.

The first motorist on the scene was Senior Sergeant John Fookes, of Queenstown, who alerted emergency services.

Sgt Alley said it was too early to comment on the cause of the crash. Anyone with information could contact the Alexandra police.
