Menswear in wool awards

A menswear category has been added to this year's WoolOn creative fashion event which will conclude the Alexandra Blossom Festival.

WoolOn encourages the creative use of New Zealand wool and last year's event attracted 62 entries from all over the country.

Entries have just opened for this year's competition, which will take place on October 3.

Event co-ordinator Rebecca Connor, of Innerwink, said the show would feature a few surprises but would follow a similar format to other years.

Menswear is one of eight categories in the design competition and the supreme winner will receive the $2000 Otago Daily Times award.

The other sections are knitwear, felted, streetwear, special occasion, creative, accessory and young designer.

Section winners receive $500.

Cromwell designer Danielle Dunn won the top prize last year with a wedding dress-inspired design, titled "Merino Matrimony".

WoolOn will be the final event in the Blossom Festival programme.

"The WoolOn show will be jazzed up a bit, with a few surprises in the entertainment," Miss Connor said.

The creative fibre design awards began as part of the New Zealand Merino Shearing Championships held annually in Alexandra.

Three years ago, the event came under the umbrella of the blossom festival.

Entries for the competition close on July 31 and garments must be at least 50% wool.
