Meeting on water services

Rain showers fell as residents of Roxburgh and the surrounding district had their say last night on priorities and issues for water services in their area now and in the next 30 years.

The consultation meeting was the first in a series of 10 being staged by the Central Otago District Council and about 40 people attended to give their views on water, stormwater and wastewater.

Council assets and contract manager Murray Washington said it was a valuable exercise and the first stage in a review for water services management in the district.

Council water services manager Russell Bond outlined the current services and costs and issues surrounding the delivery of those services.

He sought feedback from those attending the workshop on any problems with the existing services and what they saw as priorities looking into the future.

"We want to know what level of service you think you'd be comfortable with in the future and what we need to do to get there," he said.

Residents highlighted areas prone to surface flooding after heavy rain and most said wastewater was a case of "out of sight, out of mind".

Some asked about the possibility of separating out grey water so it could be recycled.

• The next workshop will be in Ranfurly tonight , followed by meetings in Cromwell, Omakau, Alexandra, Clyde and Naseby next week and Patearoa the following week.
