Many groups share in trust's generosity

Aside from the $1 million grant announced yesterday for the Wanaka Swimming Pool, the Central Lakes Trust also granted another $189,077 in its September round of grants.

The grants included $30,838 to ''project litefoot'', which is designed to help sports clubs save money by being more efficient with water, electricity and waste.

The grant will enable 13 clubs to install energy-efficient light bulbs, replace water cylinder wraps and lag pipes, fit aerators to high-flowing taps and weights to single-flush toilet cisterns, and provide recycling bins.

The trust approved a $50,000 grant to the Lauder Beautification Society to help restore and relocate the Lauder Railway Station.

The station was moved in the 1980s from its original site on the Lauder railway siding along the Otago Central Rail Trail to a paddock adjoining a Bed and Breakfast across the road.

The owners have now given the building to the community, and society sub-committee member Pam Harrex said yesterday the building would be returned to near its original site, restored and information panels installed.

It would then provide shelter for rail trail cyclists and walkers.

The trust granted $21,730 to the Hospice Southland Charitable Trust to buy a vehicle for a palliative care nurse.

Hospice Southland staff from Invercargill provide specialist care to the Wakatipu Basin, and the grant will help enable a palliative care nurse specialist to be based in Queenstown.

Hospice promotions officer Renee Goldup said the nurse would support individuals facing terminal illness and their families, who would prefer to remain in Queenstown for end-of-life care.

Other grants approved in September: Clyde Bowling Club, greens equipment, deck, sunshades, $21,285; Rotary Club of Cromwell Charitable Trust, interpretation panels for 45th parallel south track, $2000; Roxburgh District Medical Centre Trust, car park and landscaping, $31,974; Wakatipu Reforestation Trust, native planting, educational programmes and signage, $31,974; Southern Lakes Arts Festival Trust, Aspiring Conversations 2016, guarantee against loss, $10,000.
