Man dies after being hit by car

A Chinese orchard worker died yesterday after he was hit by a car on the highway between Alexandra and Clyde.

In a statement, police said emergency services responded after reports a pedestrian was hit by a car on State Highway 8, near Airport Rd, about 5.45pm,

St John spokeswoman Victoria Hawkins said an ambulance arrived at the scene four minutes after the call was received.

A rescue helicopter was deployed but was ''stood down'' after the ambulance arrived, she said.

''The patient had died at the scene,'' she said.

The man was aged in his 20s, she said.

A section of highway between Alexandra and Clyde was closed overnight and diversions were put in place while the serious crash unit investigated.

Lyngveien Homestead co-owner Andrea Pyle said the man had been staying at the homestead.
