Police have named the Alexandra man who fell from a van travelling at speed through the Cromwell Gorge.
Andrew James Sinclair (25) remains in a serious condition in Dunedin Hospital.
Mr Sinclair fell from the van as it travelled at about 100kmh on Saturday evening.
Sergeant Derek Ealson said police were speaking to a number of witnesses who had seen the van travelling on State Highway 8 prior to the incident.
A serious crash investigation continues.
