Dozens of keen bargain hunters queued patiently in Patearoa yesterday before the doors were opened to the Crockery Bob sale.

Antiques and other goods were hot items among shoppers as organisers were kept busy throughout the morning.

The sale is named after district identity and Sowburn storekeeper Bob McSkimming.

Organiser Helena Knuesel said about 80 people had formed a queue, 30 minutes before the sale was opened.

She said the volunteers were "all very happy".

"It’s a great cause.

"It all goes back to the community."

The sale had a wide selection of goods yesterday.

Proceeds from the sale go to the Patearoa Ratepayers Association.

One of the more popular attractions was an antique wooden trunk believed to be worth about $2000.

Ms Knuesel believed the trunk was more than 100 years old, although the interpretation of the intitials M.G.D. on the side of the chest remained a mystery.

Another person donated about $450 worth of pine firewood.
