Alexandra and Clyde residents are the inspiration behind a play to be performed by the Clyde Theatre Group later this year.

Heaven Help Us! is a comedy set in the waiting room of heaven where a group of eclectic characters vie for entry through the pearly gates.

Dunedin playwright Tim Hambleton based the play on local characters from his time spent living in Alexandra, where he worked as a lawyer.

Clyde Theatre Group president Moy Sainsbury and director Janice Millis, both of Alexandra, said they were excited about the 15-scene play, which was scheduled to run for five or seven nights in May.

Mrs Sainsbury said it was the first play based on local content to be performed by the group in its recent history.

Potential actors had shown interest early, she said.

"We usually have trouble getting men on stage so we thought this would be easier with just two male characters, and ironically we've already had a lot of interest from men in particular," Mrs Sainsbury said.

Auditions were recently held at the Clyde Memorial Hall.

"We had our usual lot turn up, as well as two new men, which was great.

So overall there were about seven and some backstage helpers.

We are confident we have filled the roles of our characters," she said.

Mr Hambleton, who is a Dunedin-based prosecutor, worked at law firm Bodkins in Alexandra during the 1990s before moving to the city.

Heaven Help Us! is his second play, and includes six characters.

"I wrote it because there is plenty of scope for humour with death.

"Also, death is something that affects us all and I didn't want to write about taxes," Mr Hambleton said.

His first play, titled A Law Unto Themselves, was closely based on Mr Hambleton's personal experiences as a lawyer in Central Otago.

The legal comedy was performed by the Invercargill Repertory Group in 2000.
