Lineman's service noted

TheVincent Community Board observed a minute's silence yesterday as a mark of respect for the Alexandra lineman who died last week.

Roger Steel (63) was killed on Thursday near Millers Flat when the concrete power pole he was working on came out of the ground and toppled over.

Mr Steel, who worked for Delta Utility Services Ltd, was attached to the pole and fell more than 12m.

Board chairwoman Clair Higginson said Mr Steel was the person who placed banners on the Alexandra bridge to mark various festivals throughout the year.

After the meeting, she said Mr Steel was "the guy we always talked to, to get those sort of things done.

He's done a good service, quietly, over a number of years for us and he'll be greatly missed."

Three investigations are under way into the circumstances surrounding Mr Steel's death.

The Labour Department and Delta are carrying out their own inquiries, as are police.

"We're still looking into the matter and our findings will be reported to the coroner, as happens when there is any sudden, unexplained death," Sergeant Andy Reed said.

Delta chief executive Grady Cameron said he was not in a position to comment, as investigations had only just started.

Mr Steel's funeral will be held in Alexandra this afternoon.
