The woman had left a potful of something cooking on her stove but then forgot about it and went out of her house to do messages, locking her front door.
The pot started smoking and a neighbour heard the smoke alarm.
Three fire appliances and a police car attended the incident.
The house was filled with smoke but firefighters forced entry to the house before the pot caught fire.
The woman, who preferred not to be named, said she was grateful she had just replaced the batteries in her smoke alarm and reminded people to check their smoke alarms.
She also thanked the emergency services who attended the incident.
